But as you race through your travel checklist, the question arises: “How am I going to manage my Invisalign?” This is a completely normal thought, and the good news is, your journey to a perfect smile can continue, even as you travel and explore the world.

Regardless of whether you are in the middle of your treatment or in the retainer phase, it is easy to travel with Invisalign. With a little planning, you can stay on track with your treatment and not miss out on any fun while you travel. Here are our essential tips for traveling with your Invisalign for a seamless and stress-free trip.

Before You Go: Pack for Smile Success

A little planning prior to your departure can be monumental.  It’s like adding a “go-bag” for your smile.

1. Pack Extras – This is not up for discussion.

Always, always, pack more than just the set you are currently in. It is advisable to also pack your previous set and at least the next two after that. Why? Flights are delayed, bags can be lost, and sometimes trips will run longer than intended. Having an extra set of aligners is key to not unnecessarily prolonging your treatment if something goes wrong for whatever reason. Again, pack these in your carry on bag, not your checked luggage!

2. Assemble Your Aligner Travel Kit:

Keep these essentials in a small pouch in your hand luggage for easy access:

• Your aligner case (to store your aligners while you eat)
• Travel toothpaste and a toothbrush
• Dental floss and/or interdental brushes
• Aligner “chewies” to help with seating your trays properly
• A small container of mouthwash

On the Move: Managing Aligners Like a Pro

For those traveling with Invisalign aligners, one of the greatest comforts to discover is that you will be going about the same routine you would at home.

If You are an Ongoing Patient:

The primary guideline still applies: wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day. While on the road, you can keep them in while flying, taking the train, or visiting a new city. It’s pretty simple to manage:

• Eating and Drinking: You can just take your aligners out when you want to eat or drink anything besides drinking water. When you have finished, go to the restroom and quickly brush your teeth before putting the aligners back in. If you cannot brush your teeth immediately, rinsing your mouth with water is a good temporary solution.
• What about that perfect picture? If you are worried about your aligners being a distraction in a picture, don’t be! They are designed to be totally invisible, and they rarely show up in pictures anyway! But if it makes you feel more comfortable, just remove your aligners for the picture. Just be sure to put them back in shortly after!

Fundamentally, you will manage your aligners the same way as you would at home. There is no “travel mode” needed.

Congratulations! Your work has become even easier. You will continue to wear your retainers as indicated with your orthodontist to maintain your beautiful results. Packing and hygiene remain as mentioned, keep them in their case when not wearing them, as well as clean!
