You’ve got a dazzling new smile now that your professional whitening is complete. What a great feeling! Laugh as you please, smile for photos without having a fleeting thought, and you have significantly increased your confidence in your overall appearance.
But now that you are sipping your first beverage after whitening, an important question emerges: “How do I keep my smile this white!?”
This is the most common question we get here at Thyme Dental and is a completely valid one. You just put forth a great effort, both time and money, to reach this perfect shade of whiteness, the last thing you want is for it to wear partially or completely off.
The good news is the process of maintaining your teeth whitening results is far simpler than you might believe, no mastering a lifetime of deprivation to keep it white, just a new set of progressive habits and we are proud to say that we see our role not only as a provider for a new smile, but also as your partner in keeping it beautifully white for life.
Here is our ultimate guide to caring for your smile after whitening, featuring our top recommended strategies and tools.
The Critical First 48 Hours (The “White Diet”)
This is your most crucial time for your new smile. Right after a professional whitening treatment, your tooth enamel is temporarily more porous. You can consider it like a sponge when its pores are more open. Being in a more porous state puts your teeth at risk for re-staining for the first 48 hours.
For 48 hours, your mantra should be “If it can stain a white shirt, it can stain my teeth.”
During these 48 hours, you need to be vigilant. We call this the “White Diet.”
Foods to AVOID for 48 hours:
- Dark Beverages: Coffee, black tea (chai), dark red wine, colas, and all dark-coloured juices.
- #1 Indian Culprit – Turmeric (Haldi): This is the one food to avoid at all costs! Turmeric is one of the most powerful natural stain-causers on the planet. Avoid everything that has haldi in it – curries, daals, etc.
- Dark Sauces: Soy sauce, tomato sauce (ketchup, tomato sauce), vinegar, and barbecue sauce.
- Dark Fruits & Berries: Blueberries, blackberries, pomegranate (anaar), cherries.
- Staining Vegetables: Beetroot (chukandar), spinach (paalak).
- Other Stainers: Chocolate (dark chocolate), all tobacco products.
Foods to EAT for 48 Hours:
- Proteins: Skinless chicken breast, white fish, turkey.
- Carbohydrates: Plain rice, pasta (with a white/Alfredo sauce), potatoes (without skin: mashed or baked), white bread, idli, dosa (no sambar!).
- Dairy: Plain yogurt, milk, white cheese (paneer).
- Fruits & Vegetables: Bananas, apples (without skin), cauliflower.
- Drinks: Water (still or sparkling) and milk.
The first 48 hours serve as the foundation for a long-term result. After 48 hours, your enamel would be sealed, and you can begin to slowly introduce your normal diet… unless you have changed to the new smart habits listed below.
Daily Habits to Maintain Teeth Whitening Results
Your life returns to normal after 48 hours. But to maintain that great smile, your version of “normal” should consist of a few new, simple, manageable activities.
1. Perfect Your Everyday Oral Hygiene
This is your first line of defense.
- Brush… But Gently: An important step is to brush your teeth at least twice a day for two complete minutes. Also, remember to use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brushing too hard (scrubbing) can weaken your enamel, which may eventually make your teeth more vulnerable to staining and sensitivity.
- Floss. Every. Day. Stains like to build up in the small spaces in-between your teeth, which can create a discolored “frame” around each tooth. The only method of removing plaque from these areas is to floss, and this can eliminate the discolored “frames” and help keep your smile bright and consistent.
- Use the Correct Toothpaste: You can use a “whitening” toothpaste, but know what you are using it for. These toothpaste formulations do not bleach your teeth; they are mild abrasives that can polish off new surface stains. Use in conjunction with regular fluoride toothpaste to help protect your enamel.
2. Be Smart About “Stainers”
We don’t want you to alter your morning chai or coffee habits permanently. The trick is to be strategic.
- The Straw Trick: For staining cold drinks (like iced coffee, iced tea, or colas), use a straw. Straws avoid contact with your front teeth, thus greatly reducing contact.
- The Rinse Rule: This will be your strongest ally. After any staining food or drink (like your morning coffee, glass of red wine, or curry) rinse your mouth out vigorously with plain water. Swish it around vigorously for about 30 seconds. This simple act washes away the staining pigments and neutralizes the acids before they have the chance to set.
- Don’t Brush Yet: After drinking an acidic drink (like wine or soft drink) your enamel is soft temporarily, so brushing immediately can cause damage to your enamel. Instead rinse with water and wait 30-60 minutes before brushing your teeth.
Your Secret Weapon for Lifelong Radiance
While daily habits are excellent at preventing new stains, a little fading is expected over months and years. How can you return to that “Day 1” brilliance without needing a complete in-office treatment each time?
That’s where our proprietary option comes in:
The At-Home Maintenance Package
We created this package exclusively for our patients. After all, your wedding isn’t just one day, right? You want your smile to be just as radiant for your reception, honeymoon, and first-anniversary photos. This is where our maintenance package will come back to work for you.
- What it is: After your clinic visit, you can select our at-home bleaching kit. We take a precise digital impression of your teeth in order to create custom trays.
- Why custom trays are important: These trays are custom-sized to fit your smile perfectly, which provides even coverage of the gel to every contour and curve of your teeth. Custom trays are infinitely better than one-size-fits-all over-the-counter trays that may leak gel and irritate your gums. The benefit of the custom tray is it keeps the gel on your teeth where it is doing the whitening and keeps it off your gums where it may cause sensitivity.
- How it works: We provide you with a professional-grade, lower-concentration whitening gel to use with your custom trays for a short period once or twice daily (30-60 minutes). The goal here is not to whiten your teeth from scratch, but to maintain that shine and brightness you got in the clinic.
- The benefit: This allows you to take control of your smile. Does your smile feel a bit faded before your Diwali celebration? Did you have a big meeting or big wedding planned? You would just use the at-home kit for a few evenings. You can “top up” your sparkle before every occasion and always have your smile be its best. This at-home kit is your key to a radiant smile that lasts through the entire wedding season and for years to come.
Partner with Your Dentist for Lasting Success
Your bright smile is the outcome of teamwork.
- Never miss your 6-month cleaning: When it comes to securing your teeth whitening results, there is nothing more impactful than attending a regular dental check-up and a professional cleaning. In-house, we will use our dental tools to remove any hardened plaque (tartar), as well as to polish and buff off any surface stains that an in-home toothbrush cannot.
- The best time to use your At-Home Maintenance Package is immediately following your 6-month professional cleaning. Your teeth will be free of plaque and in the best state for a touch-up session. Your whitening results will be maximally restored.
Your lifetime of confidence is ahead of you
Your smile is beautiful and bright; this is truly an investment in your confidence. By practicing the steps outlined here for continuous care. The White Diet, smart daily habits, and the impact of your At-Home Maintenance Package, you are not only protecting your teeth but the sense of joy and freedom that comes from a smile that you genuinely love.
